George Orwell (real name — Eric Arthur Blair) was an English prose writer, essayist, journalist, and critic. His work is marked by sharp social criticism, opposition to totalitarianism, and open support for the democratic aspirations of humanity. He was the author and popularizer in political discourse of the term "Cold War." The novella "Animal Farm" — one of the most famous allegorical works in the world — was first published on August 17, 1945. According to Orwell, the book describes the events of the 1917 revolution in the Russian Empire and the rise of the Stalinist dictatorship era in the Soviet Union. Orwell was a relentless critic of Joseph Stalin and an enemy of Stalinism since the time of the civil war in Spain. Orwell believed that a cruel dictatorship prevailed in the Soviet Union, based on the cult of personality and strengthened by the rule of terror. The easily recognizable characters and events of the book allow a new perspective on the bloody and terrible pages of our country's history and provide protection against the ideas of communism for many generations to come.
